Friday Class

INTRODUCTION TO BLADE SHEARING (2 day class)

Fri.  10 am to 4 pm & Sat.  9 pm to 4 pm                class fee: $140.00               materials fee: none

Level of Expertise: beginner and beyond

 

In this class, participants will learn the basics of the preparation and sharpening of hand shears, the positioning of the sheep for shearing and blade shearing techniques.  Also reviewed will be the best clothing and footwear for shearing, care of the blades, minimizing back stress, conditions for efficient shearing and differences in sheep breeds and in Angora goats.  Burgeon & Ball No. 10 blades will be available for students to borrow or buy.  Students should wear comfortable clothing.

 

America’s foremost “blade” (hand) shearer, Kevin Ford, teaches workshops, gives public demonstrations of hand shearing, speaks to fiber guilds and sheep breeder organizations and writes articles on blade shearing.  He has written the finest book on blade shearing available today; Shearing Day:  Sheep Handling, Wool Science and Shearing With Blades.  He annually shears more than 4,000 sheep and goats in Massachusetts were he resides.

Saturday Classes

THE MAGIC OF PLANT DYES  (1½ day class)

Sat.  9 am to 12 pm & 1 pm to 4 pm & Sun. 9 am to 12 pm          class fee: $100.00          materials fee: $15.00

Level of Expertise: beginner and beyond

 

Students will dye wool, silk, and cotton fibers with Indigo, Cochineal and Marigolds.  These dye plants will create blue, red, and yellow colors (primary) on the fibers.  A second dip in the dyes with some of the primary dyed fibers will create violet, orange and green colors (secondary).  Students will be chopping, grinding and stirring to get the colors out, it is like being magicians. 

 

Students should bring: notebook, pencil/pen, scissors, 3 ring binder, wear clothes you don’t mind getting dyed.

 

Grete Bodøgaard was born in Bodø, Norway, and currently lives in Volin, South Dakota.  She apprenticed in textiles, focus on the Bog People, at The Historic Archeological Research Center in Denmark, and Textile Conservation in London.  Studied Norwegian Tapestry Techniques, dating back before 1200 AD, with Maria Brekke Kooppen, Oslo, Norway.  Her weavings have been commissioned throughout the Midwest, including St. Michael’s Church in Sioux Falls and Rapid City Regional Hospital.  Her exhibitions include A Fine Line, a touring exhibition to the Portland Center for the Arts and to the Center for Tapestry Art, New York; The Human Weft at the American Renaissance Gallery in Portland; Beyond the Spill, an environmental exhibit at the Alaska Fine Arts Center in Anchorage; Norwegians in America in Hamar, Norway, and World Weavers Wall at the Gryphon Gallery in Melbourne, Australia.  Grete received the South Dakota Governor’s Award in the Arts for Creative Achievement in 2003.  Grete travels across South Dakota as An Artist in the Schools with SD Arts Council, she also conducts adult workshops in spinning, plant dyeing and tapestry weaving.

 

MARKET BASKET (4 hour class)

Weave a “Market Basket” that you can use for shopping, gardening or in the home.  Approximate size 8” x 10” x 4-5”.

 

Materials to bring to class:  pruning shear or sharp heavy scissors, clothes pins (12), plastic measure tape, pencil, dish pan, spray bottle, old towel, old shirt or apron.

 

Phyllis Knutson found her passion for weaving with rattan reed since 1992 and teaching since 1995.  In 1998 she was introduced to birch bark and in 1999 she found new excitement working with this beautiful, leather like bark.  She has been privileged to teach at the annual Heikinpaiva Mid-Winter Festival at Hancock, MI; John C Campbell Folk School at Brasstown, NC; North House Folk School at Grand Marais, MN; basket weaving guilds & community ed classes.  She sells her baskets at art shows and galleries in the Amery, WI area.

 

SHORT ROW HEELS DEMYSTIFIED (3 hour class)

Sat. 9 am to 12 pm          class fee: $35.00          materials fee: none

Level of Expertise: familiarity with knitting in the round using double-pointed needles

 

Short-row heels are faster to knit than heel flap/gusset heels, and they’re the perfect style heel to use when knitting with self-patterning sock yarns because there is no distortion of the established yarn patterning.  Learn how to knit a no-wrap, short-row heel in this class.  Handouts will be provided.  Class members will need to bring a sock knitted to the point where the heel begins.  Participants should be familiar with knitting in the round using double-pointed needles.

 

Students should bring to class: scissors and a sock cuff, knitted with worsted weight yarn on size 5 needles, CO 48 sts., join.  Work 15 rounds K2P2 ribbing, work Stockinette st. for 6”.

 

Kathleen Taylor is a writer, spinner, crafter, wife, mother, grandmother, and life long knitter.  She has written 4 knitting books: Knit One, Felt Two , Yarns to Dye For , and I Heart Felt (February 2008, The Taunton Press).  She has completed work on The Big Book of Sock Knitting (working title) for The Taunton Press, which is slated for publication in September ‘09.  She has also written many magazine articles (most recently: Spindle-Spun Christmas Stocking, Spin-Off, Winter 2006), and has designed many sock and sweater patterns for the Knit Picks yarn company.  She has designs in several upcoming books: The Prayer Shawl Companion, 101 Luxury One-Skein Wonders, and Homespun, Handknit II.  She lives in Redfield, South Dakota.

RAKE LOOM WEAVING (2 hour class)

Sat.  9 am to 11 am          class fee: $25.00           materials fee: $15.00

Level of Expertise: beginner (children & adults)

 

Students will use a hand held loom to create a double knit pattern.  Width and length of project will be determined by the student.  The loom and yarn  will be provided.  However, students may purchase their own yarn and bring to class to use for their first project.  The basics of staring the loom and casting off can be learned in a short time.  The size of your project can be small for the class or take home to finish.  For all who may or may not knit and crochet, this is a goof proof pattern for making a knitted scarf!

 

Students should bring:  their own yarn if they desire, scissors and any size crochet hook.  Crochet skills are NOT REQUIRED for this project.

 

Geri Rutledge likes to teach classes to all ages.  She comes to us from Nebraska and brings classes that are familiar to us and then adds new.  Geri and her family raise National Grand Champion Alpacas and Llamas.  She is a certified fleece judge with the ALSA Alpaca Llama Show Association.  The family enjoys going to shows and training their animals in performance courses.  They have the Camelkids Alpaca Llama 4-H Club with 20 youth learning judging skills along with training the animals.  Geri likes to find projects for all age groups.  She especially enjoys the teaching and the "therapy" of group conversations during the creation process.  It's fun to see the familiar faces and then get to meet the new.  Geri travels with her son Marshal, who does a great job of helping.

 

HOW AND WHY TO MEDITATE (2 hour class)

This workshop will discuss why people meditate and how to meditate.  Students will explore how awareness of ourselves helps us communicate with others and improves the quality of life.

 

Students should bring:  something substantial to sit upon as the class will take place on the floor - i.e. roll one or two blankets together.

 

Dan O’Brien has been meditating and learning with an advanced experienced teacher for over 10 years.  He has taught meditation at a yoga studio in various community education courses.  The approach is Buddhist in nature but also very simple.  This teaching includes teachings from various paths.  Dan had the good fortune of spending time with the teacher and Dharma group on a trip to Laos in February 2008.

 

LEARN TO KNIT (1½ hour class)

Students will learn how to cast-on, knit, purl and cast-off.

 

Sue Nelson learned to knit when she began working for Knitter’s Magazine in 2002.  It wasn’t a requirement, but she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to learn from some of the best knitting minds in the industry.  There were so many people right there at the office to give guidance to anyone  who had a question about knitting.  That same year she learned about NCFF.  Of course she went and took a beginning spinning class and was hooked.  With the help of Rick Mondragon, she purchased her Traveler spinning wheel the same day.

SAORI FREE-STYLE WEAVING (2 hour class)

Sat. 10 am to 12 pm or 3 pm to 5 pm          class fee: $25.00          materials fee: $5.00

Level of Expertise: beginner and up (children & adults)

 

SAORI is very different from the traditional weaving, placing more importance on free expression and creativity than on technical skills or regularity of the woven cloth.  Students in this class will relax, enjoy, explore and have positive thinking through weaving.  This is a therapeutic/healing weaving.  Even though there are only two harnesses, students can still enjoy weaving with many colors and textures.  Students will take home whatever the length they wove.  The warp will be set for students so they can start weaving right away.  The finished project might be a scarf, table runner or wall hanging.

 

Dan and Chiaki O’Brien are SAORI Leaders Committee Certificate recipients.  Chiaki worked as an instructor for the SAORI head office in Japan.  They have taught at schools for artists in residencies, Weavers Guild of MN, Shepherd’s Harvest, Community Education programs for people with and without disabilities, at the MN Children’s Museum, NCFF and art shows.  They have a studio in their home in Chaska, MN.  One of their dreams is to have SAORI inclusive classrooms where people with and without disabilities learn together side by side just like they learned SAORI back in Japan.  They have been enjoying meeting people through SAORI.

 

DECORATING FELTED EASTER EGGS WITH BEADS AND EMBROIDERY  (2 hour class)

Students of all ages will enjoy using beads and/or embroidery to create delicate, funny, bright or “bling bling” styled Easter Eggs.  All supplies will be available.  Students will use pre made felted eggs.

 

Geri Rutledge likes to teach classes to all ages.  She comes to us from Nebraska and brings classes that are familiar to us and then adds new.  Geri and her family raise National Grand Champion Alpacas and Llamas.  She is a certified fleece judge with the ALSA Alpaca Llama Show Association.  The family enjoys going to shows and training their animals in performance courses.  They have the Camelkids Alpaca Llama 4-H Club with 20 youth learning judging skills along with training the animals.  Geri likes to find projects for all age groups.  She especially enjoys the teaching and the "therapy" of group conversations during the creation process.  It's fun to see the familiar faces and then get to meet the new.  Geri travels with her son Marshal, who does a great job of helping.

 

BEGINNING NEEDLE FELTING (3 hour class)

Sat.  12 pm to 3 pm          class fee: $35.00          materials fee: $15.00

Level of Expertise:  beginner (adults and children 10 yrs and older)

 

Using a Styrofoam cone, prepared wool, and a felting needle, students will learn how to layer, shape and create a three dimensional person, character or animal.  The Styrofoam cone can either be removed and used again or incorporated into the piece as you chose.  Bring a 6 inch cone to class with you or I will have some available for sale (not included in materials fee).

 

Students should bring to class:  a piece of foam or cushion as a mat to work on to help prevent getting poked with the felting needle (approximately 5” x 5” x 3”).

 

Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, Linda Martin soon learned that in spite of her upbringing, she was not a city person at heart.  Deprived of nearly any pet she is now undertaking to over compensate for those lost years.  She has llamas, English Lop rabbits, cats, dogs, a couple of chinchillas and a few cashmere goats.  She also has two adult foster people living with her, so her time is not always her own.  Several years ago, a fiber friend told her to take a needle felting class.  Linda learned that Needle felting is so very forgiving and that if she did make mistakes, they are easily yanked out and that area could be started over again.  This was the medium for her.   She designed a couple of sweatshirt kits and eventually started having a booth at fiber shows.  Making soft sculptures is what she really enjoys as well as, helping others get started in this art form.  "My art now embodies my love for animals and can, at times, display my love of laughter as many of my pieces bring smiles to on lookers.  I hope you enjoy visiting my booth and I hope to see you in my classes."

BEGINNING SPINNING (3 hour class)

Students will learn the basics of spinning prepared wool - first by hand then

by spindle or wheel.  Spinning & plying for particular projects will be discussed.

 

Students should bring:  wheel or hand/drop spindle - please note on registration if one or the other is needed.

 

Susan Brugger has been knitting since she was four years old.  She started spinning about 25 years ago as a means of creating specific yarns for her knitted creations.  She has taught Beginning Spinning in the Sioux Falls area and enjoys the relaxing process of twisting fibers into yarn.

 

CROCHET WITH WIRE AND BEADS (4 hour class)

Sat.  1 pm to 5 pm          class fee: $40.00          materials fee: $15.00

Level of Expertise: intermediate

 

Students will be using a chain stitch and a slip stitch to create a necklace and braclet with wire and beads.  Participants should have a basic knowledge of crocheting.

 

Students should bring: steel crochet hook size #1, a larger size crochet hook, approximate size G & scrap yarn for practice, tape measure, wire cutters or scissors to cut wire, 2 pt. or qt. zip lock bags, scotch tape or masking tape.

 

Connie Herring has an MFA in sculpture from the University of South Dakota.  She has exhibited her sculptures and installations throughout the Midwest, and maintains an active exhibit schedule.  She also designs and makes jewelry, books and weavings.  Connie has taught numerous workshops for children, college students, adults and teachers and taught art at Dakota State University for nine years.  Connie uses copper wire in a variety of ways including knitting, crocheting, weaving and basket techniques for her installations and sculptures, as well as for jewelry.  Her jewelry and handmade books can be seen at the Horse Barn Art Center gift shop in Sioux Falls, SD. www.connieherring.com

 

FELTED HAT OR PURSE WORKSHOP (3 hour class)    CLASS FULL

Sat.  2:30 pm to 5:30 pm          class fee: $35.00          materials fee: $25.00

Level of Expertise: beginner and beyond

 

Students in the class will learn to felt wool and create a custom made hat or purse.  Using hot water, soap, alpaca or llama fiber and “elbow grease” wonderful hats/purses will be created.  Fiber will be washed and carded, ready to use.  The hats will be shaped using a block that comes in 3 styles - rounded, flat and cowboy.  Finishing techniques will be demonstrated to complete your project.  The instructor will provide fiber, written instructions and other necessary supplies.

 

Students should bring:  two large bath towels, sharp scissors, tape measure, a ruler and rubber gloves if sensitive to hot water/soap.

MARY’S LACY BASKET (4 hour class)

Level of Expertise: beginner/intermediate

 

This basket starts with a 6” round oak base, 3/16 weavers and a lacey row of bleached cane.  Can be used for rolls, bread, fruit, etc.

NEEDLE FELTING CREATURES - ATTITUDES AND ANGLES  (4 hour class)

Level of Expertise: intermediate

 

This class is for people who have created projects before and would like to work on expressions.  We will create an animal of your choice concentrating on attitudes of the critter and its face.  It would be helpful, but not necessary if you would bring along a piece that you have started but kept features such as face, attitude of the body, etc. blank.

 

Students should bring to class:  cushion of some sort to prevent poking yourself.

 

Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, Linda Martin soon learned that in spite of her upbringing, she was not a city person at heart.  Deprived of nearly any pet she is now undertaking to over compensate for those lost years.  She has llamas, English Lop rabbits, cats, dogs, a couple of chinchillas and a few cashmere goats.  She also has two adult foster people living with her, so her time is not always her own.  Several years ago, a fiber friend told her to take a needle felting class.  Linda learned that Needle felting is so very forgiving and that if she did make mistakes, they are easily yanked out and that area could be started over again.  This was the medium for her.   She designed a couple of sweatshirt kits and eventually started having a booth at fiber shows.  Making soft sculptures is what she really enjoys as well as, helping others get started in this art form.  "My art now embodies my love for animals and can, at times, display my love of laughter as many of my pieces bring smiles to on lookers.  I hope you enjoy visiting my booth and I hope to see you in my classes."

 

RUG HOOKING (3 hour class)

Learn how to make hooked rugs with wool in the primitive style.  Students will make a 6” round  mat of a Snowman’s face.  Supply fee to be paid to the instructor the day of class includes the pattern on Monks cloth, wool, hook and material to finish the mat.

 

Equipment and supplies students need to bring to class:  scissors and a 10” embroidery hoop.

 

Darlene Hofius and her daughter Tracy Kellen, have been primitive rug hooking for 6 years.  They both hook mainly with wool fabric but have incorporated wool yarn into some of their rugs.  The pair finds every aspect of rug hooking enjoyable – designing the pattern, dyeing the wool and hooking the rug.

HAND SPINDLING (2 hour class)

In this class you will learn to spin on a hand spindle.  You will learn about different types of fiber and how they are prepared.  Students will see a variety of hand spindles and demonstrations on using the different types of spindles, time permitting.

 

Students should bring to class:  a handspindle and hand cards if they have these items, otherwise there will be spinning tools available to use in the class.

 

Grete Bodøgaard was born in Bodø, Norway, and currently lives in Volin, South Dakota.  She apprenticed in textiles, focus on the Bog People, at The Historic Archeological Research Center in Denmark, and Textile Conservation in London.  Studied Norwegian Tapestry Techniques, dating back before 1200 AD, with Maria Brekke Kooppen, Oslo, Norway.  Her weavings have been commissioned throughout the Midwest, including St. Michael’s Church in Sioux Falls and Rapid City Regional Hospital.  Her exhibitions include A Fine Line, a touring exhibition to the Portland Center for the Arts and to the Center for Tapestry Art, New York; The Human Weft at the American Renaissance Gallery in Portland; Beyond the Spill, an environmental exhibit at the Alaska Fine Arts Center in Anchorage; Norwegians in America in Hamar, Norway, and World Weavers Wall at the Gryphon Gallery in Melbourne, Australia.  Grete received the South Dakota Governor’s Award in the Arts for Creative Achievement in 2003.  Grete travels across South Dakota as An Artist in the Schools with SD Arts Council, she also conducts adult workshops in spinning, plant dyeing and tapestry weaving.

 

I-CORDS, NOT JUST FOR HANDLES (2 hour class)

Level of Expertise: a basic knowledge of knitting is necessary for this class

 

Students will learn how to incorporate i-cord as a woven structure into knitted garments.  I-cord will embellish cuffs, head-bands and more.

 

Materials to bring to class:  16” cable needle, size 3-4, one set of double point needles size 3-4, 10 - 12 different amounts of scrap yarns, 1 skein of worsted weight yarn in a dark color.
